Materials
Closed-cell foam Tan fly tying foam (2 mm strip for body)
Closed-cell foam Tan/underbody (thin strip for base)
Elk or deer hair Natural/bleached elk hair (wing)
Round rubber legs Barred tan rubber legs (1 pair)
Sighter foam Orange foam strip (small tab for indicator)
Dubbing Tan dubbing (sparse underbody)
How to tie it
Start the thread behind the eye and lay a base back to the bend, stopping above the barb.
Cut a tapered strip of tan foam a little over one shank-length, tie it down at the bend, and bind it along the shank leaving the tail portion projecting slightly past the bend.
Dub a thin tan underbody forward over the shank to two-thirds of the way to the eye.
Pull the foam strip forward over the top of the shank and tie it down at the two-thirds point to form the segmented body and head, leaving a stub of foam over the eye.
Stack a small clump of elk hair and tie it in as a downwing at the tie-down point, tips reaching to the back of the body.
Tie a rubber leg to each side at the same point so they splay out, and add a small orange foam tab on top as a sighter.
Build a few tight wraps to secure everything, whip finish under the front foam stub, and add a drop of cement to the thread wraps.
