Wet Fly · Trout · Grayling · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly / spider hook, 14-16
  • Thread Yellow / primrose (Pearsall's Gossamer 3) 8/0

Materials

  • Silk Pearsall's Gossamer yellow, waxed (full body)
  • Body The waxed yellow silk (shank)
  • Hackle Pale feather from the inside of a snipe's wing (1 turn)

How to tie it

  1. Run the waxed yellow silk from behind the eye to above the barb and back to the two-thirds mark; the silk forms the body.
  2. Tie in a soft pale covert from the inside of a snipe's wing by the tip at the two-thirds point.
  3. Take one sparse turn of hackle and lock it with two turns of silk.
  4. Stroke the fibres back, build a small head, whip finish and varnish.
