Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL nymph, down eye, 12-16
  • Thread Tan/cream 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Wood duck flank fibers Wood duck (for tail and wingcase)
  • Fur dubbing Cream/tan (or amber hare's ear) (for abdomen and thorax)
  • Fine wire rib Gold wire (5 in)
  • Hen or partridge hackle Ginger/brown hen or partridge hackle (1 feather (legs))

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend and tie in a short wood duck tail about half a shank long.
  2. Tie in the gold wire, then dub a slim tapered cream-tan abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  3. Tie in a slip of wood duck fibers pointing forward over the eye to fold back later as the wingcase.
  4. Dub a fuller thorax up to just behind the eye.
  5. Pull the wood duck wingcase over the thorax and bind it down behind the eye.
  6. Wind the gold wire forward in 4-5 open turns as a rib over the abdomen and thorax, and helicopter off the excess.
  7. Tie in a ginger hen hackle, take one or two turns for legs, sweep the fibers down and back, build a small head, whip finish, and cement.
