Materials
UV gel core Fritz chenille Sunburst (bright yellow) (About 3 inches)
Teal flank feather, dyed Yellow flanks (1 feather, tied in by the tip)
Extra tying wax Clear or beige extra tying wax (A touch on the thread)
How to tie it
Mount a size 8 Hends BL599 in the vise. Add a little extra wax to the fluorescent red thread for purchase, then lay a base back to a point above the hook point, no further, and back forward, leaving a slightly built-up bump just behind the eye. This orange underbody occasionally shows through the Fritz.
Take the sunburst gel core Fritz and strip the fibers off one end to expose the bare core. Tie the bare core in above the hook point and trim.
Wrap the Fritz forward, every turn jammed hard against the last. Stroke the fibers rearward as you go, and untwist the strand a half turn each revolution. It adds twist every time you come around.
Stop leaving a little room at the front, stroke everything back, tighten down, and cut off the Fritz. Take a few thread wraps back over the front of the body to train all the fibers rearward.
Select a dyed yellow teal flank feather with plenty of black barring and strip off all the under-fluff. Expose the very tip, stroke the remaining fibers back to leave a V-notch, and tie the feather in by that tip. Wrap back over the stem and trim.
Take two turns of the teal, check the leg density, then add another turn or so until it looks right. Tie off, snip the stem, and pull free any fibers that got trapped.
Stroke all the legs back and build a deliberately prominent orange-red head. It is meant to be a hot spot.
Two whip finishes, then quickly singe or snip any stray fibers around the eye.
