Leggy Spruce Moth

Dry Fly · Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 10-16 (12-14 most common)
  • Thread Tan (gray or olive also work) 70 denier stretchy thread (Ultra Thread)

Materials

  • EP Trigger Point Fibers (tail) Amber vinyl rib medium (1 small clump)
  • Antron dubbing Squirrel belly (1 thin noodle)
  • Round rubber legs, small or medium Tan barred rubber legs medium (2 strands (two legs per side))
  • Snowshoe rabbit foot hair (wing) Natural cream or white snowshoe rabbit foot hair (1 small clump, half a pencil width or less)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base from behind the eye back to a point above the hook point.
  2. Tie in a small clump of amber EP Trigger Point fibers as the tail, exactly one shank length long. Snip the tag ends and bind them down smooth.
  3. Wax the thread and spin on a thin noodle of squirrel belly Antron. It is better to add too little than too much. Wrap it forward in even turns, filling every gap, stopping just short of the eye.
  4. Lay a length of tan round rubber under the thread from below, pinch it against the near side, and take a turn that hugs the rubber tight against the body so two legs stand out on that side. Repeat on the far side and lock both in.
  5. Cut a small clump of snowshoe rabbit foot hair, half a pencil width or less, and pull out the loose excess fibers.
  6. Set the wing on top of the shank, about one shank long, and cinch it down with several firm wraps. The stretchy thread lets you really pull.
  7. Straighten the legs, sweep everything back, and take the thread to just behind the eye.
  8. Whip finish. Either trim the butt ends off flush or leave a short stub of fibers standing caddis-style. Finish with a drop of head cement.
