Reference Recipe

  • Hook Stainless saltwater, straight eye, 1/0-3/0
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 3/0 (210 denier)

Materials

  • Grizzly saddle hackles Grizzly hackle (4-6)
  • Bucktail Natural brown/tan bucktail (1 sparse clump)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands (optional))
  • Stick-on or painted eyes Red/black eyes (1 pair (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base over the rear third of the shank and stop above the barb.
  2. Pair the grizzly saddle hackles into two bunches with the curves facing out, and bind them in at the rear as a splayed tail two shank lengths long; a couple of thread turns under the butts flare them.
  3. Wrap a thin thread body forward to the 75% mark to lock the hackle butts, keeping everything slim.
  4. Stack a sparse clump of brown bucktail and tie it on top at the 75% mark, tips reaching the hackle tips, to form the wing.
  5. Rotate the hook and tie a shorter brown bucktail bunch underneath as a beard so the collar wraps around the shank.
  6. Add a few strands of pearl flash down each side if desired, no longer than the wing.
  7. Build a smooth tapered head, whip finish, and cement; glue or paint on eyes and cement again.
