As tied by Geoff Johnston

  • Hook Kamasan B175, 12
  • Thread Olive dun 8/0 (Uni)

Materials

  • Weight Sticky-back lead sheet, cut about 1 mm wide (Mid-shank toward the eye)
  • Thorax cover Black Flexibody strip
  • Tail Dark green partridge fibres (About half the length of the fly)
  • Rib Glo-Brite floss, no. 10 (Open, even turns)
  • Abdomen and thorax Awesome Possum dubbing, dark olive (The tyer also calls it dark green in the video; abdomen about two thirds, thorax one third)
  • Head Varnish (On the thread under the thorax cover)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread behind the eye, wind down the shank to lock it, trim, then wind back up to just behind the eye.
  2. Tie in a strip of black Flexibody along the side of the hook and lift it on top of the shank. Whip finish and take the thread off.
  3. Cut sticky-back lead sheet about 1 mm wide. Wind it from the middle of the shank toward the eye in touching turns, then back over the last turn with two or three more.
  4. Restart the thread on the bare shank behind the weight and wind down to the bend.
  5. Pull a few dark green partridge fibres away from the stem and even the tips. Tie them in as a tail about half the length of the fly.
  6. Tie in a length of floss for the rib, then wind the thread back to the thorax to lock it and trim the stub.
  7. Dub a little dark olive possum at a time onto the thread. Wind it up the hook to form a tapered abdomen, about two thirds of the body.
  8. Twist the floss tight and wind it up the abdomen in open, even turns. Tie off at the thorax and trim.
  9. Dub the thorax a little more generously.
  10. Pull the Flexibody over the thorax and down, hold it, take one wrap, whip finish and remove the thread. Add a little varnish on the wraps, then cut off the surplus Flexibody, leaving a short stub.
  11. Leave the varnish to dry. Pick out the thorax with a velcro brush, sweeping the fibres back toward the bend, and remove any stray long ones.
