Materials
Rabbit dubbing (body) Olive ice dub (About a 1.5 inch noodle; dry-fly dubbing substitutes fine)
Partridge feathers (wing) Natural mottled grouse feather (Two small slips, tied flat and spent)
Peacock herl (thorax) Natural peacock herl (One strand, three or four wraps)
Dry-fly hackle Brown and grizzly hackle (One of each, three or four turns each)
Head cement Clear head cement (A drop)
How to tie it
Start olive thread and lay a base down to the start of the bend. This is a caddis, so there is no tail.
Put a little wax on the thread and dub a 1.5 inch noodle of olive rabbit. Wrap it forward with a slight taper, stopping at about the two-thirds point, and leave a small bump of dubbing at the front: it helps prop the wings.
Take two small partridge slips and tie them in flat on top, spent to each side, with a couple of loose wraps first so you can manipulate them into position (tie them in one at a time if they keep spinning).
Take a couple of tighter wraps in behind the dubbing bump so the wings flare out to the sides, then lock them in with a few good turns and snip the excess.
Measure a brown and a grizzly dry-fly hackle for barbs about one and a half times the hook gape, and tie both in at the same point with a couple of wraps, keeping them perpendicular to the shank so the first turns come off cleanly. Snip the butts.
Tie in one strand of peacock herl and take three or four wraps under where the hackle will go, up to about an eye-length back, to give a hint of green and gold; tie it off.
Wrap the grizzly hackle three or four turns, back it off slightly and tie it off without crowding the eye; snip.
Wrap the brown hackle two or three turns up through the grizzly, tie off and snip.
Push the hackle fibers back with your fingers and snip off any that insist on pointing forward over the eye.
Whip finish with about four turns and add head cement.
