Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook (Tiemco 100), #14-18, #14-18
  • Thread Cream / pale yellow 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tail Dun Microfibetts (split) (4-6 fibers)
  • Body/abdomen PMD (pale yellow-olive) Superfine dry-fly dubbing (pinch)
  • Wing Mallard flank (no-hackle wing) or light dun poly/CDC (2 sections or 1 clump)
  • Thorax PMD Superfine dubbing (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Start the cream thread and run a smooth base to the bend. Tie in 4-6 dun Microfibett tail fibers and split them into two divided clumps (a small ball of dubbing at the base helps splay them) about one shank length long.
  2. Dub a slim, slightly tapered abdomen of PMD Superfine forward to the 60-65% point.
  3. For the no-hackle version, tie in two matched mallard-flank wing sections upright and slightly split (duck-quill style) at the 65% point; or tie in a single upright clump of light dun poly yarn or CDC for a easier durable wing.
  4. Dub a PMD thorax around the wing base, figure-eighting through it to set the wings, and taper up to just behind the eye.
  5. Whip finish a small head and cement. Keep the whole fly slim and sparse so it sits low in the film like a natural PMD dun.
  6. Trim the bottom hackle flush if you substitute a parachute or Catskill build so the fly sits flush on the surface.
