Latex Larva Bead

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved caddis/scud hook (1XL), #12-16
  • Thread Brown or olive 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Gold or copper bead Gold / copper tungsten bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Dubbing or floss (underbody) Cream / olive dubbing or floss (1 pinch)
  • Latex strip (body) Cream / pale green latex strip (1 thin strip)
  • Dubbing (thorax) Dark brown / black dubbing (1 pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the bead onto the hook, small hole first, and seat it against the eye. Start the thread behind the bead.
  2. Dub or wind a smooth, tapered underbody of cream or olive over the rear three-quarters of the shank to color the latex.
  3. Tie in a thin latex strip at the bend.
  4. Wrap the latex forward in slightly overlapping turns to behind the bead, stretching it over the abdomen so it segments and swells like a grub; tie off and trim.
  5. Dub a small dark brown thorax behind the bead to suggest the head.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of cement.
