How to tie it
Start the thread at the back of the shank and work slightly down the bend, but not far.
Tie in a short length of red medium Cactus Chenille and palmer a small butt at the rear. Fold the fibres back and capture them with thread, then trim. It is not an egg sack; its job is to help split the hackles in the next step.
Pick four similar saddle hackles. Set the tail about two shank lengths behind the hook. Tie two feathers in curving outward on one side, right against the chenille, then two more curving outward on the other side. The chenille and the feathers' natural curve splay them like crab claws. Trim the butts.
Pick out the longer fibres from a clump of artic fox so they are all the same length, and tie them in on top so they reach about halfway down the feathers.
Trim the wire from a length of EP foxy brush and tie it in right in front of the fox. Palmer four or five wraps, tie off and cut the wire. Pick out trapped fibres with a bodkin, fold them back and wrap back over so everything lays rearward.
Take a bigger, webbier saddle hackle, strip the butt and tie it in with the curve facing down toward the hook, right in front of the fox. Palmer it tightly forward, tie off and trim, then push the fibres back and wrap back over the feather so it lays down with the fox.
Advance the thread to about half a shank. Tie in the mono eyes, snug but not so tight that you bend the stems.
Tie in the EP tarantula brush and palmer it forward in touching wraps up to the eye, pulling the material back after each wrap. Tie it off on the underside of the fly, build a small neat head in front of the eyes, and whip finish.
Pass a lighter quickly over the front to clear trapped fibres, then coat the eye wraps with Deercreek Sculpt UV resin and cure so the eyes and thread never move.
