How to tie it
Start brown thread on an Ahrex FW561 and tie in a short wisp of Antron for the trailing shuck. That shuck is the whole idea of the pattern, a chironomid stuck half out of its pupal skin is an easy meal and a sitting duck.
Add a grizzly hackle tip over the Antron, about twice as long, to complete the shuck. The barred tip gives the trailing skin its mottled look.
Tie in a small clump of deer hair, about half a pencil width, doing your best to keep it sitting on top of the shank rather than spinning around it. On this pattern the deer hair is a wing, not a spun body.
Dub a body forward. The original is a bare thread body, so leave the dubbing out if you want it authentic. It works either way.
Pull the deer hair forward over the body, still keeping everything on top, tie it off and clean up the butts. The hollow hair is what floats the fly low in the surface film rather than perched on top of it.
Wind a grizzly hackle three or four turns at the head, tie off and whip finish. Fish it dead still during a chironomid emergence. The takes are slow and deliberate.
