Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL nymph/scud hook, #14-16
  • Thread Yellow or tan 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Gold tungsten bead Gold bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Brown hackle fibers or biots (tail) Brown hackle fibers (1 small clump)
  • Dubbing (abdomen) Pale yellow / amber dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Small wire rib Copper wire (1 length)
  • Dubbing (thorax) Brown dubbing (1 pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the gold tungsten bead onto the hook, small hole first, and seat it against the eye. Start the thread behind the bead and lay a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short, sparse tail of brown fibers about half a shank length.
  3. Tie in the copper wire at the tail and leave it hanging.
  4. Dub a slim, tapered abdomen of pale yellow forward over the back two-thirds of the shank.
  5. Rib the copper wire forward in 4-5 evenly spaced turns, then tie off and helicopter to break the wire.
  6. Dub a small brown thorax behind the bead.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of cement.
