Start Orange UTC thread behind the eye. Seat the Silver Medium Brass Eyes as close to the hook eye as you can, leaving just a wrap or two of bare shank, and figure-8 them down. A touch of super glue locks them.
Run the thread all the way back to the bend. Tie in the Large Black Mono Eyes at the bend with figure-8 wraps and make sure they are secure.
Tie in Pink Medium Cactus Chenille at the bend and take just a couple of wraps in and around the mono eyes. Tie off, trim, and work the thread back to the eyes. Snip stray fibres and, if it looks too full, thin the chenille on the hook side of the eyes, which the fish does not see.
Prepare the claws off the hook: cut a short piece of Tan Zonker Strip, split the fur into two bunches, rub Loon UV Fly Finish into each while twisting it to a point, cure, and stain the tips with a red marker. Tie one claw in with the leather facing inward toward the fly, using the mono eyes as a prop to stand it out to the side. Repeat with an identical claw on the other side, wrap forward to secure, and trim the excess.
Build the body from Tan and Brown EP Fibers. Cut small sections, take the thread back to the claws, lay a section across the top of the shank, centre it and X-wrap it in, then lock it with tight wraps. Alternate tan and brown and repeat forward until you reach the brass eyes.
Trim the body. Pull all the EP fibres upward and cut at an upward angle so the body starts narrow and widens toward the rear for the classic wide, V-shaped profile. Fine-tune any stragglers.
Take four Turtle Grass Olive Loco Legs, lay them in right behind the brass eyes and X-wrap them in the same way as the fibre. Trim the legs so they reach back past the body to about halfway down the claws.
Optional weed guard: double over a piece of 20 lb hard mono, place it on the hook, take a few wraps in front of it and behind it, and trim it just longer than the hook point.
Whip finish, trim any remaining stragglers, and brush a healthy dose of super glue over the exposed thread on the underside of the hook.
