Start the 210 denier tan thread about a quarter back from the eye and lash a pair of large gold brass dumbbell eyes on top of the shank with tight figure-eight wraps, then lock them with wraps underneath. Heavy thread is essential. Anything finer lets the eyes rotate.
The eyes go on top so the fly rides hook point up, which is what lets you fish it hard along rocky bottoms without hanging up. That is the whole reason this fly works for smallmouth.
Tie in a clump of copper Kreelex flash behind the eyes, extending roughly two shank lengths past the bend, and bind it along the shank.
Tie in a matching clump of gold Kreelex over the top, slightly shorter, so the two colours layer and shift as the fly moves. Kreelex is a soft, wide flash that pulses instead of standing stiff. It is the entire body of the fly, and its movement is the imitation.
Build a smooth thread head in front of and behind the eyes, whip finish, and trim the flash to a tapered minnow shape.
Coat the head and eye wraps with Solarez Bone Dry and cure. Fish it with a fast, erratic strip - Chuck Kraft designed it as a smallmouth fly and it fishes best darting and flashing, not swimming steadily.
