How to tie it
Mount an Allen D202 carp hook - Tim ties this between size 6 and size 1, and this one is a 4. The points are extremely sharp, so mind your fingers throughout.
Lay a short thread base with olive 6/0, running back a little less than halfway and then forward again.
Tie in chrome dumbbell eyes, leaving a clear gap behind the eye of the hook so there is room to finish the head and still get a wrap or two of chenille in front of the eyes at the end.
Wrap back and stop about halfway between the eyes and the rear of the hook.
Tie in a small cluster of green Crystal Flash, bringing the thread forward first so you do not have to fuss with the tips, then wrapping back. Set the length a little shorter than the body. Use less flash in clear water and more in off-coloured water.
Strip the end of the speckled chenille back to the core threads and tie the core in. Wrap the chenille forward, take a wrap or two in front of the dumbbell eyes for a finished look, and tie off without crowding the eyes.
Half hitch or whip finish to lock everything down. You are about to take the hook out of the vice.
Cut a rabbit zonker strip so the hair flows towards the rear of the fly. Take the hook out, push the point through the skin about an eighth of an inch from the front end of the strip, then wrap the strip round and bring the front of it up to the hook eye.
Remount the fly upside down in the vice. Remember it fishes hook point up because of the dumbbell eyes, so the wing must sit on what is currently the top.
Part the hair at the front of the strip to find a clean separation point, wet it with saliva if it will not part, get the thread down into the gap and lock the strip with five fairly aggressive wraps.
Pull the tag end of the strip away from the eye and trim while pulling, so nothing crowds the hook eye.
Whip finish once, add a drop of Sally Hansen Hard as Nails to the thread, extend the head a fraction and whip finish again.
