Knuckle Breaker Caddis

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Ahrex FW511 (curved nymph/scud hook), #16
  • Thread Black 50 denier GSP

Materials

  • Tungsten bead Coffee (One, 2.7mm)
  • EZ Magic Dub (body) Tan (also tied in olive and caddis green) (One length)
  • Buggy nymph dubbing (thorax collar) Dark hare's ear (A small pinch; most any dubbing works)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the 2.7mm coffee tungsten bead onto the hook, small hole first, and seat it behind the eye.
  2. Start the black GSP thread behind the bead and wrap a smooth base back to the start of the bend, building a slight thread underbody to fill the space behind the bead.
  3. Tie in the EZ Magic Dub at the rear of the shank and bind the tag forward.
  4. Wrap the Magic Dub forward in touching turns to form a slim, segmented larva body, stopping a short way behind the bead to leave room for the thorax; tie it off and trim.
  5. Dub a short, buggy collar of dark hare's ear dubbing in the gap between the body and the bead.
  6. Pick the collar out with a dubbing brush so it is scruffy, then whip finish behind the bead.
