KJ's Candy FAB

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gape nymph/grub hook, barbless (Hanak H900 / Kamasan B175), #10-12, #10-12
  • Thread Fluorescent orange (or pink) 70 denier (UTC Ultrathread)

Materials

  • Foam tail (arse) Booby foam cylinder, orange/pink or yellow (Hends Booby Eyes 6 mm, one cut off) (1)
  • Body 'Candy' colored Jelly Fritz / straggle fritz (FNF Jelly Fritz, pink-orange 'candy') (1)

How to tie it

  1. Start the fluorescent orange thread at the bend of a wide-gape hook.
  2. Cut a short foam cylinder (or split a pair of booby foam eyes into one) and tie it in at the bend so it sticks out over the back as the buoyant foam 'arse' tail, about a third of a shank long; lock it with tight figure-eight wraps.
  3. Tie in a length of 'candy' (pink/orange) Jelly Fritz just in front of the foam.
  4. Wrap the Jelly Fritz forward in touching turns, stroking the fibres back after each wrap so they don't trap, up to just behind the eye to build a full, jiggly blob body.
  5. Tie off the fritz behind the eye and clip. Build a small thread head, whip finish and cement.
  6. Pick out any trapped fritz fibres so the blob is round and mobile; the foam tail should make the fly stand up and hover.
