Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly / lake fly hook, 8-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Tag Gold tinsel (few turns)
  • Tail Golden pheasant tippet (short)
  • Rib Gold tinsel (4-5 turns)
  • Body Crimson floss (tapered)
  • Hackle Brown hen (beard/collar)
  • Wing Grey mallard (pair)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in gold tinsel at the bend, forming a short tag.
  2. Tie in a short golden pheasant tippet tail over the tag.
  3. Tie in the gold ribbing tinsel, then wind a smooth tapered body of crimson floss forward, stopping short of the eye.
  4. Spiral the gold rib forward in 4-5 even turns and tie off.
  5. Apply a brown hen hackle as a beard beneath the shank (or a short collar).
  6. Set a matched pair of grey mallard slips low over the body as the wing; build a neat head, whip finish and varnish.
