Reference Recipe

  • Hook Long-shank saltwater streamer hook (Gamakatsu SL12S), 2/0
  • Thread Clear (monofilament) 0.10 mm monofilament (e.g. Veevus)

Materials

  • Select craft fur White and olive (match your baitfish)
  • Laser yarn (Sanyo) White and olive laser yarn
  • Fish Skull Living Eyes (7.0 mm pair)
  • Head coating Liquid Fusion
  • Superglue / nail cement (few drops)

How to tie it

  1. Put a drop of fast nail cement/superglue on the bare shank and wrap the monofilament thread over it back to a point above the hook barb.
  2. For the tail, take a sparse clump of white craft fur, leaving some of the underfur in for bulk, taper the butts, and tie it in above the barb.
  3. Stack a second, smaller clump of olive craft fur directly on top of the white and take a few wraps, then a couple of wraps underneath, so the tail sits full but not flat. Add a small drop of glue to lock the tail.
  4. Advance the thread forward a little. Take a small handful of white laser yarn, straighten the fibers so they all run the same direction, and 'V-tie' it: tie it in across its middle on the BOTTOM of the shank so a chunk splays to each side.
  5. Turn the hook over and V-tie a matching clump of olive laser yarn on the TOP of the shank the same way.
  6. Move forward about halfway down the shank and repeat: white V-tied on the bottom, olive V-tied on top, keeping fibers straightened each time. (Optional: add a small pinch of orange at the throat.)
  7. At the head, take a final white clump and tie it in PARALLEL to the shank (not V-tied) just behind the eye, rolling it so it wraps around the hook. Push all the yarn back, build a small thread dam, and finish with two whip finishes.
  8. Brush the whole yarn head/body out with a stiff brush (dog brush) to blend the colors into a solid baitfish profile.
  9. Set the Fish Skull Living Eyes onto the sides of the head and lock the yarn and eyes with a brushed coat of Liquid Fusion; let it cure.
