Foam drawer liner (body) Black (white liner colored with a Sharpie; cinnamon or two-tone also work) (One strip, pulled apart along its length so the edges fray into legs)
Widow's Web or poly yarn (wing/indicator) White poly yarn (One short length)
Dry-fly hackle Grizzly hackle (One size 14 feather, four or five turns)
Super glue Clear head cement (A dab under the body)
How to tie it
Cut a strip of foam drawer liner and pull it apart along its length so the frayed edges form the little dangling legs; if you started with white liner, color it black (or cinnamon, or black at one end and cinnamon at the other) with a marker.
Put the hook in the vise and start the black thread in the middle of the shank.
Gather the foam strip together over the middle of the hook and lock it on with a couple of wraps of thread, so the front and rear segments stand out as the ant's two body lumps.
Come in underneath and add a small dab of super glue at the tie-in to hold the foam body firmly to the hook.
Tie in a length of white Widow's Web or poly yarn at the same mid-shank point as an upright wing/indicator, and trim it off just behind the fly body at the back and close at the front.
Tie in a grizzly hackle (a size 14 is fine, since the bottom gets trimmed anyway) and take at least four or five turns at the waist; tie off and remove the excess feather.
Whip finish, then trim the hackle flat across the bottom so the fly rides low in the water.
