Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard or curved dry-fly / emerger hook, 14-18
  • Thread Pale pink 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Zelon / Antron trailing shuck Amber zelon or antron (sparse tuft)
  • CDC feathers Light dun / cream cdc feathers (1-2 for hackle stacker)
  • Superfine dubbing Pink / salmon PMD (1 pinch)
  • Monofilament Clear weed guard (short loop post)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread mid-shank and tie in a sparse amber Zelon trailing shuck at the bend, one hook-gap long.
  2. Dub a slim, tapered pink/salmon abdomen forward over the rear two-thirds. Many PMD emergers turn pinkish as they transform, and that hint of pink is the trigger here.
  3. Tie in a short clear mono loop pointing back over the body to anchor the hackle stacker.
  4. Tie in the tips of one or two light-dun CDC feathers at the front and dub a small thorax ball behind the eye.
  5. Sweep the CDC back and pull the mono loop forward over the thorax to fan the CDC into a low canopy in the film; bind and clip the mono behind the eye.
  6. Whip finish a small head and cement the wraps only, keeping cement off the CDC.
  7. Trim any fibers under the hook so the fly rides flush.
