Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard or curved dry-fly / emerger hook, 16-20
  • Thread Olive 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Zelon / Antron trailing shuck Amber / olive-brown yarn (sparse tuft)
  • CDC feathers Dun / medium grey cdc feathers (1-2 for hackle stacker)
  • Superfine dubbing Blue-wing olive (1 pinch)
  • Monofilament Clear weed guard (short loop post)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at mid-shank and tie in a sparse amber/olive Zelon trailing shuck at the bend, one hook-gap long.
  2. Dub a slim, tapered olive abdomen forward over the rear two-thirds of the shank.
  3. At the thorax, tie in a short loop of clear monofilament pointing back over the body. This is the anchor for the hackle stacker.
  4. Tie in the tips of one or two CDC feathers at the front, then dub a small thorax ball just behind the eye.
  5. Sweep the CDC back and pull the mono loop forward over the top of the thorax, drawing the CDC fibers into a splayed canopy that sits flush in the film; bind the mono down behind the eye and clip the excess.
  6. Build a small head, whip finish, and add a tiny drop of cement to the wraps only. Keep it off the CDC.
  7. Trim any stray fibers beneath the hook so the fly rides low, abdomen in the surface film.
