Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, #14

Materials

  • Rabbit dubbing Dark chocolate brown (About 1.5 inches of dubbing on the thread for a size 14)
  • Dyed squirrel tail (wing) Dark brown / dyed to match hair (A clump about 1/16 inch in diameter)
  • Grizzly hackle (Whiting) Grizzly hackle (One feather, two or three turns)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and dub about an inch and a half of dark chocolate brown rabbit onto it, keeping the noodle very fine and sparse.
  2. Wrap a slim, even body forward, stopping about 1/16 inch short of the eye to leave head and wing space.
  3. Cut a small clump of dyed squirrel tail, about 1/16 inch thick, and clean out the underfur. Do not stack it: the ragged tips are what you want.
  4. Set the wing flat on top of the shank with the tips extending about one hook-gap past the bend, tie it down at the head space, and trim the butts off.
  5. Strip a few barbs off the base of a grizzly hackle and tie it in at the front.
  6. Take two or three turns of hackle, tie it off and clip the excess.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye.
