How to tie it
Wrap the shank with lead, then flatten it top and bottom with pliers so the finished nymph sits low and wide like a natural stonefly. Cover with a thread base.
At the bend, tie in two black goose biots splayed into a wide V-tail about a hook-gap long.
Optionally tie in a rib of copper wire, then dub a shaggy black stonefly-blend abdomen forward over the rear 60% of the shank; counter-wrap the rib in 5-6 turns if used and tie off.
For the thorax, work in three turkey wing cases: dub a short thorax segment, tie a section of dark mottled turkey over the top pointing back, then repeat twice more so three overlapping wing cases stack forward. This triple wing case is the Kaufmann signature.
After the front wing case, tie in two black goose biots pointing forward off the eye as splayed antennae.
Dub a final head between the antennae and whip finish.
Pick out the thorax dubbing along the sides with a bodkin to suggest legs, and add a drop of cement at the head.
