Materials

  • Pseudo/dumbbell eyes Red dumbbell eyes (1 large pair)
  • Angel Hair Pearl flashabou (small clump (flash))
  • Rabbit strip, barred Black-barred olive or natural rabbit strip (1 strip (tail/wing))
  • Simi Seal dubbing Silver minnow (1 dubbing loop (belly))
  • Mallard flank Natural mallard flank (1 feather (collar))
  • Rabbit fur Sculpin olive/tan (cut fur for dubbing-loop head)

How to tie it

  1. Lash the large red eyes on top of the shank about one eye-length behind the hook eye with tight figure-8s so the fly rides hook-point up.
  2. At the bend, tie in a sparse clump of pearl Angel Hair, then a black-barred rabbit strip on top for a tail/wing one to one-and-a-half shanks long. Standard-width strip is used because it moves without soaking up as much water as a magnum strip.
  3. Spin silver-minnow Simi Seal in a dubbing loop and wrap 2-3 turns to build a deep belly forward of the tail.
  4. Wrap a natural mallard flank feather as a soft, sweeping collar and stroke the fibers back.
  5. Cut a pile of rabbit fur, load it into a dubbing loop, spin, and wrap it forward around the eyes, packing tightly and sweeping back to build a full head.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and snip.
  7. Trim the spun rabbit head into a broad, flat-topped sculpin shape, wide across and tapered toward the belly, leaving a soft collar trailing.
