Reference Recipe

  • Hook Wide-gap streamer/predator hook, 2/0
  • Thread White or chartreuse GSP 100-200

Materials

  • Bucktail White, chartreuse, olive (stacked) (several clumps)
  • Magnum Flashabou Pearl / chartreuse magnum flashabou (1 clump (flashtail + accents))
  • Laser Dub / Senyo's Laser Dub Chartreuse over white (perch) (2-3 clumps (head))
  • 3-D stick-on eyes Yellow/red eyes (2)
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (over head/eyes)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread near the bend and tie in a flashtail of magnum Flashabou reaching a full shank length past the hook to give the fly its length without added weight.
  2. Over the flash, tie in a clump of white bucktail top and bottom as the base of the body, then a stripe of Flashabou.
  3. Stack darker bucktail (olive/chartreuse) on top and a little white on the belly to build a perch-shaped profile; keep it sparse so the fly stays castable.
  4. Build the head in stages: spin or lash clumps of white Laser Dub on the belly and chartreuse on top, packing and brushing each rearward to blend a bulky, water-pushing perch head.
  5. Sweep and trim the Laser Dub head into a broad baitfish shape, wide at the top and tapered underneath.
  6. Set a 3-D eye on each side of the head.
  7. Whip finish at the eye, then lock the eyes and head down with a coat of clear UV resin and cure.
