Classic Recipe

  • Hook Low-water or standard salmon fly hook, 2-8
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Gold twist (plenty) (as needed)
  • Tail Ibis (two strips) (2 strips)
  • Butt hackle Coch-a-bonddu tinged Bismarck brown, cheeked with jungle cock (1 + jungle)
  • Body Yellow and black chenille in twelve alternate coils (as needed)
  • Centre hackle Coch-a-bonddu, cheeked with jungle cock (1 + jungle)
  • Head hackle Coch-a-bonddu, cheeked with jungle cock (1 + jungle)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap a generous tag of gold twist over the barb, then tie in two strips of scarlet ibis (or dyed swan substitute) for the tail.
  2. At the butt wind a coch-a-bonddu hackle tinged with Bismarck brown and cheek it with a small jungle cock feather each side.
  3. Wind the body in twelve alternating close coils of yellow and black chenille, wasp-fashion, to build the striped hornet look.
  4. Set a second coch-a-bonddu hackle at the centre of the body, cheeked with jungle cock, and a third at the head, also cheeked, so three hackle stations run along the fly.
  5. Form a small head and whip finish.
