Wet Fly · Trout · Advanced · 2 versions

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly / lake fly hook (larger for bass), 2-10
  • Thread Red or black 6/0

Materials

  • Tag Flat gold tinsel (few turns)
  • Tail Barred wood duck (short)
  • Rib Oval gold tinsel (4-5 turns)
  • Body Red silk floss (tapered)
  • Hackle Silver badger hackle (beard/collar)
  • Wing Two jungle cock nail (eye) feathers, back to back (pair)
  • Head Red (Berlin wool or thread) (small)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in flat gold tinsel at the bend, forming a short tag.
  2. Tie in a short barred wood-duck tail over the tag.
  3. Tie in the oval gold rib, then wind a tapered body of red floss forward, stopping short of the eye.
  4. Spiral the gold rib forward in 4-5 even turns and tie off.
  5. Apply a silver badger hackle as a beard beneath the shank (or a short collar).
  6. Set two jungle cock nail feathers back to back as the wing, standing over the body. The enamelled 'eye' spots are the whole point of the fly.
  7. Finish with a small red head, whip finish and varnish.
