Materials
Bead White brass bead (sized to hook) (1)
Weight .015 lead-free round wire (6-10 turns)
Thread (abdomen) White UTC 70 (1 spool)
Thread (thorax) Black UTC 70 (1 spool)
Body Superhair, red and black strands, twisted together (2-3 strands)
Casing / wingcase Medium pearlescent (pearl) tinsel (1 strand)
Thorax Peacock ice dub (pinch)
Gills / legs White floss or white Antron (small tuft)
Coating Loon UV Fly Finish (thin/flow) (1 coat)
How to tie it
Slide the white brass bead onto the hook up to the eye.
Behind the bead, wrap 6-10 turns of.015 lead-free wire and shove them up against the bead to add weight and fill the front taper.
Start the white thread behind the wire and lay a smooth base back to the bend, locking the wire wraps.
Tie in the red and black Superhair strands plus one strand of medium pearl tinsel at the bend, all pointing back.
Twist the red/black Superhair into a cord and wrap it FORWARD in touching turns to the 70% point to build a slim, deeply segmented larva body; tie off and trim.
Rib the body FORWARD with the pearl tinsel in 5-7 open, evenly spaced turns as a flashy casing/rib; tie off at the 70% point and trim. (Some tyers instead reserve the tinsel and pull it over the thorax as a wingcase.)
Whip finish the white thread, then start the black thread at the front of the body.
Tie in a small tuft of white floss/Antron just behind the bead, sticking up/forward, then trim short to form the white gills.
Dub a small ball of peacock Ice Dub for the thorax, right behind the bead.
Whip finish behind the bead. Coat the body (and thorax) with a thin layer of Loon UV Fly Finish and cure for a glossy, durable chironomid shell.
