Jujubee Midge Flash

Midge · Trout · Advanced · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook TMC 2488 (or 2488H) 1X-short curved-shank scud/midge hook, #18-24
  • Thread White (base), Black + one contrasting color (e.g. red) for the body 8/0 (70D) or 14/0

Materials

  • Thread / body Three strands of Superfloss or 8/0 tying thread, 2 black + 1 red (classic 'juju' combo) (3 strands)
  • Underbody thread White or black 8/0 underbody thread (1 spool)
  • Wingcase / flashback Medium Opal Mirage Tinsel (or pearl Flashabou) (1 strand)
  • Thorax flash Mirage Flash / Mirage Tinsel wrapped through the thorax (this is the 'Flash' upgrade) (1 strand)
  • Thorax Black 8/0 thread built up, over-wrapped with Mirage Flash
  • Coating Solarez Thin Hard UV resin or head cement (1 coat)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread behind the eye and lay a smooth base to the start of the bend.
  2. Tie in your 3 body strands (2 black + 1 red Superfloss/thread) at the bend, along with one strand of Medium Opal Mirage Tinsel for the flashback, all pointing rearward.
  3. Return the tying thread to the 65% point to form a level underbody.
  4. Twist the 3 body strands into a single cord and wrap FORWARD in touching turns to the 65% point, creating a slim, banded (black/red) segmented abdomen; tie off and trim. The twisted multi-color strands are the signature 'jujube' segmentation.
  5. Wrap a strand of Mirage Flash a few turns to build a sparkly thorax over the front third. This added flash is what makes it the 'Flash' version. Alternatively build a small black thread thorax and rib it with the Mirage Flash.
  6. Pull the Medium Opal Mirage Tinsel forward over the top of the thorax to form the wingcase and tie it off behind the eye; trim.
  7. Build a small neat black thread head and whip finish.
  8. Coat the wingcase and head with thin Solarez UV resin (or head cement) and cure for durability.
