Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/emerger hook (TMC 2488 style), 16-18
  • Thread White (underbody) and black (thorax) 70 denier / 14-0

Materials

  • Hen saddle or partridge fibers Brown saddle hackle (3-4 (tail))
  • Super Hair Amber/tan (2 strands) + black (1 strand) (3 strands (abdomen))
  • Fluoro Fiber Pale/white fluoro fiber (small clump (wing case/legs))
  • UV resin Clear uv resin (over abdomen and wing case)

How to tie it

  1. Start white thread behind the eye and lay a smooth base to the bend to brighten the Super Hair colors.
  2. Tie in 3-4 brown fibers for a short, split tail about half a shank long.
  3. Tie in the three Super Hair strands (two amber/tan, one black) at the 60% mark and bind them down to the bend.
  4. Wrap all three strands forward together in touching turns to build a slim, tapered, segmented amber abdomen; the black strand rides as a rib. Tie off at 60% and trim.
  5. Coat the abdomen with a thin layer of clear UV resin and cure.
  6. Switch to black thread. Tie in a small clump of pale Fluoro Fiber pointing forward for the wing case.
  7. Build a slim black thorax to the eye, fold the Fluoro Fiber back over it, tie down, and clip a few tips short as legs.
  8. Add a drop of UV resin over the wing case, cure, whip finish, and snip.
