Juan's UV Pearl Jam Midge

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Standard midge / nymph hook, #18-22
  • Thread Black 70 denier UTC (flat, untwisted)

Materials

  • Crystal Flash, UV pearl UV pearl crystal flash (One strand for the body)
  • Clear nail polish Clear head cement (One light coat over the body and head)

How to tie it

  1. Start black thread and make sure it is flattened, untwist it as needed, so it lays down smooth without lumps. This is a Disco Midge, so the underbody has to be clean.
  2. Run the flat thread back down the shank to the back of the bend, then forward again to the front.
  3. Tie in a strand of UV pearl Crystal Flash at the front and wrap it back to the bend, then forward again over the thread body in touching turns.
  4. Tie the flash off just behind the eye with a few wraps and trim it. It looks like almost nothing on the vise, but it carries a light bluish tint in the water.
  5. Untwist the thread flat again and build a small black head, just as you would on a standard Disco Midge, and whip finish.
  6. Finish with a touch of clear nail polish on top of the head and body, rolling the fly to coat all around and underneath. It forms a clear shell over the body and makes the fly last past the first or second fish.
