Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Straight-eye, big-eye short-shank wide-gap hook (TMC 101, Orvis or Daiichi big eye), #16-20
  • Thread Brown or black 70 denier (8/0)

Materials

  • Split tails (Microfibetts or hackle fibers, tied as on an RS2) Natural / dun tailing fibers (One pair, split)
  • Rabbit dubbing (Hareline chocolate brown) Chocolate brown (Enough for a tapered body. Keep it spiky)
  • Ice Dub or Diamond Brite Yellow / light olive ice dub or diamond brite (One half-inch strand for the emerger ball)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base on the shank and tie in and split the tails at the rear the same way you would on an RS2.
  2. Dub a tapered body of chocolate brown rabbit forward from the tails. Leave the guard hairs spiky rather than dubbing it slick, so it looks robust and buggy.
  3. Stop the body a short distance behind the eye, leaving a clear space.
  4. Take a half-inch strand of yellow Ice Dub or Diamond Brite, tie it in tight in that space, then use your fingers to slide it down and press it flat against the top of the shank so it sits ON TOP, not rolled around the hook.
  5. Take one turn of thread around the shank, snug it, and add a few X wraps to wedge the flash ball firmly in place on top.
  6. Dub a little more brown rabbit on the thread, come in behind the ball and wedge it, then bring the dubbing in front of the ball to lock it and fill out to the eye.
  7. Whip finish. Do not fuss over neatness. The fly is supposed to look messy, like a nymph half out of its shuck.
