How to tie it
Set dumbbell 3D eyes a quarter of the way back on a size 1 Mustad C52SBLN and cement them. Everything on this fly is measured from the eyes, so get them square first.
Tie orange fox fur in underneath at the base of the eyes, with the long guard hairs and short fibres already combed out and the clump split evenly. A brook trout parr's belly is the orange that sells the whole fly.
Add olive polar fibre on top behind the eyes and olive micro tinsel over it, then spin olive Ice Dub in a split thread, brush it out and wrap it back along the shank. Olive back over orange belly is the exact colour split of a young brookie.
Build the second layer forward of that: lighter orange fox underneath and along the sides, olive polar fibre on top, then an orange Ice Dub band wrapped behind and between the eyes. Orange at the gill line is the hot spot.
Sweep all fibres back and lock them with a thread collar, add a single strand of orange flash a side as the lateral line, then cover the collar in red thread. A red collar under a dark head reads as gills on a wounded fish.
With 24/0 thread build the head: black Ice Dub in front of the eyes, black wing flash and black polar fibre on top, white polar fibre underneath in two shortening layers so the profile tapers to the nose.
Add olive dyed grizzly hackle tips each side of the eyes and an orange and yellow rabbit throat, then cover in black thread. Singe the stray fibres past the eye with a lighter rather than cutting, cement, and add black and orange parr bars along the orange section of the wing on both sides.
