How to tie it
Lay a thread base along the straight part of the hook, fold.025 lead wire over a bodkin and bind it under the shank parallel to the hook. The weight goes underneath because this fly is tied and fished backwards. The tail sits at the hook eye.
Tie golden brown grizzly marabou tips in behind the eye as the tail, then set a dozen grey fox guard hairs on top so the tips run past the hook bend as antennae. Add the brown Scud Back, trimmed to a point, along the top to the base of the antennae.
Split the thread, load brown Ice Dub loosely, spin, brush out and wrap a ball of dubbing tight to the Scud Back. Fold the Scud Back over that ball, secure with five or six forward wraps, then fold it back. This is the repeating segment that builds the whole carapace.
Set the mono eyes on each side along the edge of the lead wire, projecting just past the dubbing, then wrap another dubbing ball behind them.
Split the fox fur into two equal claw sections with the guard hairs and hide attached, measure them slightly past the antennae, and tie one on each side before wrapping another dubbing section and folding the shellback over again.
Spin natural brown rabbit strip fur in a split thread for the legs, trimming the butts close to the thread to keep the fibers as long as possible, and wrap it forward edge to edge. Fold the shellback over the legs with eight to ten wraps.
Twist doubled copper wire with a shepherd's hook tool, wrap the last dubbed section, fold the shellback down, then rib the whole body with the twisted wire on a slight angle. Finish by covering the rear thread wraps with ultra fine brown dubbing so the tail end is as clean as the head.
