Golden pheasant tippets Orange with black bars (6-8 fibers for the tail)
Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (2 strands, used for the rear and front thirds of the body)
Mallard flank fibers Gray barred mallard flank fibers (About 10 fibers, wrapped for the middle third)
Turkey quill slips Mottled brown turkey quill (One matched pair for the wing)
Hen hackle Speckled gray hen hackle (One feather, 3 turns)
How to tie it
Lay a black thread base back to the start of the bend.
Cut six to eight golden pheasant tippet fibers, holding them by the tips so they stay aligned, and tie them in as a long tail showing both black bars. A little flare is fine. Bind the butts down with loose wraps to build the underbody.
Take the thread back almost to the base of the tail and tie in two strands of peacock herl, brittle tips trimmed off.
Wrap the herl forward five or six turns to cover the rear third of the shank and tie it off. Leave the strands attached, you will use them again up front.
Tie in about ten mallard flank fibers, grip them with hackle pliers, give them a slight twist, and wrap them forward to cover the middle third of the body. Tie off and trim.
Bring the leftover peacock herl forward and wrap the front third of the body with four or five turns, tie off and trim.
Cut a slip from each side of one mottled turkey feather, marry them on top of the shank reaching to about the middle of the tail, and tie them in with a pinch wrap. Don't pull tight until the thread is coming back up. Check they sit on top, add tight wraps and trim the butts.
Tie in a speckled gray hen feather from the thick end so the barbs are long and sweeping, trim the excess, and take three full wraps of soft hackle. Tie off and trim.
Pull all the hackle back, take the thread to the eye and wrap back to form the head, whip finish, and pluck any surplus fibers from underneath.
