Lay a black thread base down to the start of the bend.
Grip six to eight golden pheasant tippets by the tips, cut them from the feather so the tips stay aligned, and bind them in as a long tail with both black bars showing. Two wraps, check the position, then loose wraps over the butts so they become part of the underbody.
Return the thread to just shy of the tail base. Snip the brittle ends off two strands of peacock herl, bind them in, and wrap back to the tail.
The body is in thirds. Keep the two herls together with the thread and wrap five or six turns forward to cover the rear third. Tie off but leave the strands hanging; they are used again at the front.
Snip about ten long mallard flank fibers, bind them in, and trim any that stick forward. Grip them in hackle pliers, give them a slight spin, and wrap the middle third. Tie off and snip.
Advance the thread slightly, spin the peacock herl to keep it together, and wrap four or five turns for the front third. Tie off and snip.
Snip a slip from each side of one mottled turkey feather and pair them, tips reaching to the middle of the tail. Set them on top with a pinch wrap and don't pull tight until the thread is on its way back up. Two wraps, check they come off the top, then a few tight wraps and snip the butts.
Strip a speckled hen feather down to a stem and bind it in from the thick end so the barbs are long and sweep back. Snip the excess. Take three full wraps with hackle pliers, tie off with a couple of wraps, and snip.
Sweep all the hackle back with a few wraps, take the thread to the eye and wrap back to build the head, and whip finish. Pluck any surplus fibers from the bottom.
