Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 2 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL dry/streamer hook, 6-8
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 140 denier

Materials

  • Fly foam Brown thin foam (6mm strip (body))
  • Thin bug foam Tan (underwing) / orange (indicator) (2mm strips)
  • EP fibers 3-D Gray sf blend (1 clump (wing))
  • Flex-floss Brown floss (2 strands (antennae))
  • Centipede/rubber legs (medium) Speckled brown rubber legs (2 pairs)

How to tie it

  1. Lay a thread base the length of the shank. Tie in two brown flex-floss antennae off the front of the bend so they sweep back past the tail.
  2. Bind a strip of 6mm brown foam on top at the bend, leaving a long tag rearward, then segment it to the shank with 2-3 thread-band cinches to form the abdomen.
  3. Fold the rear foam tag forward and lash it down to build the buoyant overbody, stopping at the 70% mark.
  4. Tie in a tan 2mm foam underwing, then a clump of gray EP fibers over it as the wing, both reaching to the end of the abdomen.
  5. Figure-8 a pair of speckled rubber legs on each side of the thorax so they splay out.
  6. Cap the thorax with a small tab of orange 2mm foam as a hi-vis indicator post, tying it down just behind the eye.
  7. Whip finish under the foam head and add a drop of cement to the thread wraps.
