  • Hook Heavy bent-shank streamer/nymph hook, 4
  • Thread White 100 denier / 6-0

Materials

  • Lead wire Natural lead wire (.030, wrapped at rear)
  • Plummeting tungsten bead Metallic red slotted tungsten bead (5.5mm)
  • Strung marabou Sculpin olive (under) / primrose cream UV (over) (1 clump each (tail))
  • Holographic Flashabou Gold flashabou (6-8 strands)
  • Mega Simi Seal dubbing Amber olive mega simi seal dubbing (1 dubbing loop (body))
  • Sculpin wool Sculpin olive (2-3 clumps (head))

How to tie it

  1. Seat the tungsten bead at the eye, then wrap 10-12 turns of.030 lead on the REAR half of the shank and shove them back toward the bend. Weight at the tail plus a heavy head makes the fly jackknife and ride hook-point up.
  2. Build a thread base over the lead and tie in a clump of sculpin-olive marabou at the bend for a tail one shank long; layer a slightly shorter clump of primrose-cream marabou on top.
  3. Add 6-8 strands of gold holographic Flashabou over the tail, trimmed to just past the marabou.
  4. Spin amber-olive Simi Seal in a dubbing loop and wrap forward in 4-5 turns to the midpoint, building a buggy body; brush the fibers back.
  5. Cut clumps of sculpin wool and spin/stack them onto the shank, packing each tightly and sweeping the fibers back, working forward to the bead.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and snip the thread.
  7. Trim the spun wool into a broad, flat sculpin head, wide across the top and tapered toward the belly, leaving a soft collar of fibers trailing back.
