Reference Recipe

  • Hook Stinger/bass streamer hook, wide gap, 2
  • Thread To match body 3/0

Materials

  • Closed-cell foam (tapered diving head/collar) To match closed cell foam cylinder (1 sheet/cylinder)
  • Marabou (tail) To match (chartreuse, white, black, purple) marabou (2-3 plumes)
  • Flash Pearl or matching micro flashabou (several strands)
  • Palmer hackle To match hackle (1-2 feathers)
  • Rubber legs Barred, matching rubber legs (2-3 pairs)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend and tie in a full marabou tail two shanks long, flanked with several strands of flash for a swimming tail.
  2. Palmer a webby hackle collar in front of the tail to give the body bulk and pulse, then sweep it back.
  3. Tie in 2-3 pairs of rubber legs so they splay out to the sides of the body.
  4. Cut and shape a foam collar/head, then bind it on at the front so it flares back into a broad, cupped diving face. The taper is what pulls the fly under on a strip and floats it back up on the pause.
  5. Add legs or a second foam segment as needed and cinch everything tight against the collar so the head stays cocked to dive.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye, seat the knot in the foam, and add a drop of super glue where the thread meets the foam.
