Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 2x long, 8-14
  • Thread Yellow 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Red hackle fibers (short)
  • Body Yellow dubbing or yarn (robust)
  • Wing Turkey quill slip (over body)
  • Hackle Brown and grizzly hackle (clipped on bottom)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the long hook, tie in a short red hackle-fiber tail.
  2. Build a robust yellow body to the 60% mark, traditionally with a loop of yarn arching over the bend.
  3. Tie in lacquered turkey quill slips along each side, tips reaching past the bend, tent-fashion.
  4. Wrap brown and grizzly hackle at the collar and clip it flat on the bottom so the fly sits low in the film.
  5. Whip finish.
