Classic Recipe

  • Hook Long Dee-style blind-eye salmon hook, 1.5-3 inch
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Silver tinsel (as needed)
  • Tail Golden pheasant topping and Indian crow (1 + 1)
  • Body Two-fifths lemon floss, remainder black floss (full shank)
  • Rib Flat silver tinsel and twist (5-6 turns)
  • Hackle Grey heron hackle from the third turn of tinsel, palmered (1)
  • Throat Widgeon (1 collar)
  • Wing A pair of cinnamon turkey tail strips set flat (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap a silver tinsel tag over the barb, then tie in a golden pheasant topping with Indian crow for the tail.
  2. Wind the rear two-fifths of the body in lemon floss and the remainder in black floss; rib with flat silver tinsel and twist in evenly spaced turns.
  3. Tie in a long grey heron hackle at the third turn of tinsel and palmer it forward as a flowing Dee-style hackle, following the rib.
  4. Wind a widgeon throat as a beard and stroke the fibres down.
  5. Set a matched pair of cinnamon turkey tail strips flat on top of the hook (the low, flat wing is the signature of Dee patterns), form a small head and whip finish.
  6. The flat wing and long heron hackle give the fly a slim, breathing profile in the current.
