Materials

  • Bead Red bead (slotted bead)
  • Tail Claret mohair (marabou)
  • Tail flash Red holographic flash (2 strands Flashabou)
  • Rib Wine (UV Straggle)
  • Body Opal material (tinsel)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a red slotted bead onto a size 10 jig hook and start wine thread behind it. Tie a clump of claret marabou in at the rear and pinch the tail to about a body length rather than cutting it square.
  2. Add two strands of red holographic Flashabou either side of the tail as highlights, on a small dark leech a couple of strands is all it takes to get noticed.
  3. Tie in a length of wine UV Straggle at the rear, then opal tinsel in front of it, and wind the opal tinsel forward in touching turns to the bead to make a bright underbody.
  4. Tie the opal off behind the bead and trim, then barber-pole the wine Straggle forward over it, deliberately leaving gaps between the turns so the opal flashes through. That alternation of dark fiber and bright tinsel is the whole effect of the fly.
  5. Tie the Straggle off behind the bead, trim close, clean the head up and whip finish.
  6. Add a drop of glue on the thread wraps if you want it bombproof. The tyer notes it is a very simple tie but.
