Jiggy Scud

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig nymph hook (or curved jig), 14
  • Thread Tan or olive 8/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Copper bead (1, 2.8mm)
  • Scud / Ice dub Olive, tan, or pink scud ice dub (pinch)
  • Scud back (Thin Skin or clear stretch flash) Clear/olive wing slip (1 strip)
  • Fine wire rib Copper wire (1 strand)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the slotted bead at the eye and start thread behind it, wrapping a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in the scud-back strip and a length of copper wire at the bend.
  3. Dub a fat, shaggy body forward to just behind the bead, keeping it plump like a scud.
  4. Stretch the scud back over the top and bind it down behind the bead.
  5. Rib forward over the back with 5-6 evenly spaced turns of copper wire to segment it, then break off the tag.
  6. Pick out the belly dubbing so the legs stick down, whip finish behind the bead, and add a drop of cement.
