Collar Pine Squirrel Purple, Barred Schlappen Purple, and Senyos Laser Dub Purple
How to tie it
Mount the Wapsi Super Jig head in the vise and give the shank a quick coating of Danville Purple 140 thread, clipping the tag and taking the thread back to the barb as your starting position.
Tie in a bunch of Kreelex Red as the underbody flash, deliberately mixing fiber lengths and thicknesses to build mottled texture, and leave it hanging off the back.
Measure the Purple Pine Squirrel Zonker two hook lengths back for the tail, leaving a little wiggle room at the front. Puncture the hide right where the shank turns into the bend, dead centre in the narrow strip, and slide the strip around the back.
Wrap the Kreelex forward over the shank, overlapping each turn about halfway so the hook is fully covered — it does not need to be neat, you just want the red popping underneath — and secure it behind the head. Save the remainder.
Flip the hook in the vise so the hide rides underneath, then draw the Pine Squirrel strip forward on top with all the hair swept back, pulling a few fibers forward to expose a clean patch of hide as a tie-in point. Take a couple of wraps on top and a couple in front, biting hard into the hide, then clip the excess.
Split the saved Kreelex in half — three or four of the coarse strands with a few finer ones mixed in — and secure it behind the head about two lengths long, then pull it back and wrap over it to double it over for extra movement.
Collar, first layer: spin one or two turns' worth of Purple Pine Squirrel in a dubbing loop, wax your fingers to tame the fibers rearward, and brace a finger against the flat side as you take the first wraps so the loop cannot spin on you. Wrap it in and capture the loop off.
Pick a small Purple Barred Schlappen feather — pass over the giant ones — comb the tip forward with the rest of the fibers perpendicular to the quill, tie it in by the tip, half hitch, and palmer it forward to the head, pulling the fibers rearward as you wrap.
Card a bundle of Purple Senyo's Laser Dub so the fibers align, fan it out around the shank, and take a couple of big loose open wraps with no tension at all, then pull down into them and massage the fibers rearward.
Whip finish just in front of the collar, add glue, clip the thread, then flip the fly in the vise and brush all the material back until it lies uniform.
