Jigged Grey Squirrel

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig nymph hook, 14
  • Thread Grey or olive 8/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Silver or copper slotted tungsten bead (1, 2.8mm)
  • Grey squirrel dubbing Natural grey muskrat underfur (pinch)
  • Fine wire rib Silver wire (1 strand)
  • Hot-spot dubbing or thread Fluorescent orange hot spot thread or dubbing (small pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the slotted bead at the eye and start thread behind it.
  2. Tie in a strand of fine silver wire at the bend for the rib.
  3. Dub a rough, spiky grey squirrel body forward to just behind the bead, leaving the guard hairs standing for movement.
  4. Rib with 5-6 evenly spaced counter-wrapped turns of silver wire and break off the tag.
  5. Add a short fluorescent orange hot-spot collar of one or two dubbing turns right behind the bead.
  6. Pick out the body dubbing on the underside with a bodkin so it looks alive.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of head cement.
