Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Copper bead (1, 2.8mm)
  • Fox squirrel dubbing Natural hare s ear dubbing (pinch)
  • Fine wire rib Copper wire (1 strand)
  • UV / Halo hot-spot dubbing Fluorescent orange or chartreuse uv halo hot spot dubbing (small pinch)
  • Partridge Brown hen hackle (1 feather (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Seat the copper slotted bead at the eye and start thread behind it.
  2. Catch in a strand of copper wire at the bend to hang for the rib.
  3. Dub a slim, spiky fox squirrel body forward to just short of the bead, keeping it rough so the guard hairs stick out as legs.
  4. Rib the body with 5-6 open counter-wrapped turns of copper wire and tie off, then helicopter to break the wire.
  5. Build a short, bright UV hot-spot collar of two thread-dubbing turns right behind the bead. The 'halo' that flags the fly.
  6. Optionally wind one sparse turn of brown partridge in front of the body for legs and sweep it back.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and add a drop of cement.
