Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Jig nymph hook, 2XL, 10
  • Thread Brown 6/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Gold or black bead (1, 3.3mm)
  • Flexi-floss / Spanflex Brown floss (for tails and legs)
  • Stonefly dubbing or Ice dub Golden brown ice dub (pinch)
  • Body flexi-floss or vinyl rib Amber/brown floss (1 strand)
  • Mottled hen or India hen back Brown hen hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the slotted bead at the eye and start thread behind it, laying a smooth thread base back to the bend.
  2. Tie in two lengths of brown flexi-floss at the bend, split into a shallow V one shank length long for the stonefly tails.
  3. Bind in a strand of amber flexi-floss for the rib, then dub a slim golden-brown abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Counter-wrap the rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns and tie off, giving the segmented stonefly look.
  5. Tie in a pair of brown flexi-floss legs on each side at the thorax so they splay outward, then dub a fatter thorax over the tie-in points.
  6. Fold a mottled hen tip forward over the top as a short wingcase and pin it behind the bead.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and seal with head cement.
