Jig Hare's Ear Variant

  • Hook Jig nymph hook (60-degree), 12-18
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead Gold or copper slotted tungsten bead (1, sized to hook)
  • Hare's mask dubbing Natural hare's ear (pinch)
  • Pheasant tail fibers Natural pheasant tail fibers (small clump for tail)
  • Gold wire or tinsel Gold oval tinsel (fine, for rib)
  • Pearl tinsel Pearl mylar tinsel (optional, for flashback)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a slotted tungsten bead onto the jig hook and seat it against the eye; mount in the vise.
  2. Start thread behind the bead and take it to the bend.
  3. Tie in a short clump of pheasant tail fibers or hare's guard hair for a tail half a shank long.
  4. Tie in the fine gold wire at the bend.
  5. Dub a slim, tapered hare's ear abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  6. Rib the wire forward in 4-5 evenly spaced open turns and tie off.
  7. Optional: tie in a strand of pearl tinsel at 60% for a flashback.
  8. Dub a shaggy thorax up to behind the bead using plenty of picked-out guard hair for legs; pull any flashback over the top and bind behind the bead.
  9. Whip finish behind the bead, cement, and pick out the thorax to rough it up.
