Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly / lake fly hook, 6-12
  • Thread Claret or red silk 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Light purple quill slips (short)
  • Rib Oval gold tinsel (4-5 turns)
  • Body Yellow floss (tapered)
  • Hackle Scarlet (red) hen (beard/collar)
  • Wing Light purple quill slips (or purple with a scarlet married stripe) (pair)

How to tie it

  1. Start the claret thread and tie in a short tail of light purple quill slips at the bend.
  2. Tie in the oval gold rib, then wind a smooth tapered body of yellow floss forward.
  3. Spiral the gold rib forward in 4-5 even turns and tie off.
  4. Apply a scarlet hen hackle as a beard beneath the shank (or a short collar).
  5. Set a matched pair of light purple quill slips (optionally married with a scarlet stripe) low over the body as the wing.
  6. Build a neat head, whip finish and varnish.
